Upcycling a Faux Fur Jacket

by | Nov 13, 2015 | DIY

My husband teases me about my “work uniform”.

Being self-employed has a lot of perks. One of the most valuable perks for me is not having to wear professional business attire every day. That doesn’t mean that I don’t like to get all dressed up, I just like to wear comfortable clothes on a day-to-day basis.  My definition of comfortable? Sweatpants and a sweatshirt.

So when Wade sees me dressed in any combination of the variety of sweatpants and sweatshirts that I have, he knows that I am dressed for the day and ready to work.

However, this is the time of year when we frequent his company parties and special work related functions. Translation: no sweatpants or sweatshirts.

Every year I try to find a special piece to wear. A couple of years ago I bought this faux fur jacket and paired it with black skinny jeans and black boots. I looked good. 🙂

And since that time I have never worn that jacket again. 🙁  It was dry cleaned and has hung in my closet ever since.

I thought about selling it to a consignment shop, but never got around to it.

Today I decided it needed to get out of my closet.

What it really needed was to be upcycled. Faux fur pillows are so popular right now, I figured…why not give it a shot!

I ripped out all the seams leaving me with the biggest piece. The back of the jacket.

But it was just short of the amount of fabric I needed, so I added a couple of pieces from one of the sleeves and squared everything up.

The next step was to cut the two round ends from the other arm fabric.

Then it was just a matter of adding a zipper, attaching the ends and stuffing it with a bolster insert!

Good bye unused jacket, hello soft and elegant bolster pillow!

This cover is a one of a kind and now available in my shop for you to enjoy in your home!

Have a great weekend! Stop by tomorrow if you get a minute. I have a table runner you might want to check out. 🙂
