Sidenote Saturday: Helpful Hints

by | Feb 20, 2016 | Sidenote Saturday

Oh. My. Goodness.

Slash OMG as the cool kids say.

I live in a very small town. In fact there is only one stop light in the entire small town and the town is putting in a round about so they can market the town as a stop light less town.

No idea why that would be a great marketing ploy, but the city council didn’t ask me.

Moving on.

On the “main stop sign corner” of the town, which is under construction to be a round-about by spring, there is a thrift store. It use to be a grocery store but then the County Market grocery store chain moved in and shut down the “main stop sign corner” grocery store.

Continuing to move on…

We have lived in this area for 2 years now and I have never frequented this thrift store. I am more of an estate sale kinda girl. I  made a decision to expand my world,  😉 , and I decided to support the local businesses and check out the thrift store.

Back to my original statement.

OMG.

I will not tell you the name of the store because I believe in supporting local small businesses. BUT…..there is a really good chance that I will be sticking with Estate Sales from here on out.

Part of that has to do with me making a bad decision. The other part is that my father taught long ago that if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

Here is the rocking chair I thought I could upholstery.

It had a vinyl cover on the seat and back.  Some of the wood was worn, but it had a lot of character left.

A lot of character left until I started to pull off the fabric.

Let me just say that it was gross. You know when you watch a 20/20 show and people are getting sick and don’t know why until they find that black mold has grown up their walls? This old rocking chair was in that house.

I kept thinking that everything would get better as I peeled off the old vinyl fabric.

It didn’t.

See for yourself.

Ew.

I know when to wave a white flag. There was no amount of paint or fabric that was going to save this chair. The side spindles are still in great shape, so I will saw them off and rescue them for something, someday.

So many people find great success at picking items from thrift stores.

Me? Not so much.

Helpful hints:

Look for “good bones”.

Look for missing pieces and decide if you have the ability to fix it.

Tear back as much of the fabric that the shop owner will allow to see what is underneath.

Ask for a deal.

Walk away if it seems to good to be true.

I need to start taking my own advise.  🙂

Have a great Saturday,

I hope you stop by on Monday.
