Stinky To Stunning Part 3: Feeling Empowered

by | Nov 1, 2016 | DIY | 4 comments

There is something about using power tools that makes me feel so ….empowered.

I might have mentioned that when my parents were here a couple of weeks ago they bought me a table saw for Christmas. Before they left, my Dad gave me some quick lessons on how to use it and how to avoid cutting your fingers off. He really did cut off two of his fingers with the table saw. But it turned out okay. He grabbed them with his remaining eight fingers, yelled for my Mom, threw them in a bag of ice and headed to the ER. A talented surgeon reattached them and besides the fact that they aren’t perfectly straight they work fine. 🙂

Enough Halloween gruesomeness, that holiday has passed. Let’s talk about something pleasant.

The guest bedroom progress.

Here’s where we are at on the guest bedroom makeover list:

Select wall and trim colors

Buy supplies

Prep walls

Sand trim

Paint trim

Paint walls

Paint closet doors

Paint back of bedroom door

Paint window cornice

Make curtains

Buy bedspread

Make a headboard

Rearrange furniture

I haven’t really shown you the painting steps because honestly, I couldn’t come up with a creative way to write anything past; I painted the trim. Then I let it dry and I painted a second coat.

Yawn.

So you are going to have to trust me that it is painted.  🙂

Next on the list was making a new headboard. Well it wasn’t really next on the list, but it was what I was “empowered” to do yesterday. I bought a 5 panel solid door off of Craigslist to be used as the headboard.

It needed to be trimmed a little and by the time I had the dimensions all figured out, I was over it.

So my second idea was to use a piece of plywood and cover it with this barn wood looking wallpaper, yes you read that right, wallpaper.

Sunday night after dinner, I convinced Wade to go to Menards with me and get a 4×8 sheet of plywood. But as it usually goes with me, I found something I liked better that I didn’t even know existed.

This is a 4×8 sheet of reversible pre-finished panel. AND IT WAS ON SALE FOR $17.99!!

I thought “Why go through all of the trouble of wallpapering a sheet of plywood when this is exactly the effect you are going after Wendy?” Silly me.

By the time we got back home it was too cold to work in the garage so I brought the paneling into the family room and taped off the dimensions I needed for my headboard.

Back to the empowering table saw, because I know you were starting to wonder why I mentioned that. Wade helped me guide the 4×8 sheet into a much easier to handle 38”x67” piece.

I am going to put this dresser beside the bed.

To give the headboard a little more character, I cut out an arch similar to that of the dresser.

And here is where we are today.

Doesn’t look fantastic yet…..but it will. 🙂

Back to the to do list.

Have an empowering day,

~Wendy
