Give A Man A Fish

Give A Man A Fish

Many times when my Mom and I go shopping at home dĂ©cor stores like Restoration Hardware, Pottery Barn or Kirklands, we catch ourselves saying “I can make that!”

And you know what? Many times we do. 🙂

I obviously got my creative gene from my Mom. Not to say that my Dad isn’t creative, but when my Mom and I spend hours upon hours in her sewing room and my Dad goes golfing, let’s just say that he enjoys other things more than he enjoys the hum of a sewing machine.

Besides sewing, let me share with you a couple of other things I love.

I love math.  I love balancing my checkbook. I love taking an idea in my head, putting it on paper and making all of the calculations to make it happen. I love organizing. I love throwing things away etc.

Now let’s go to my “I do not like” list.

I do not like cleaning. I do not like ironing. I do not like technical things.

Technology. It’s a painful word to even type. People who can zip thru creating an excel spreadsheet or other stuff like that…. (I don’t even know the lingo to make a list of technology things) …..those people amaze me. (i.e. Spencer)

Besides the photos that Spencer takes for me,  I have had to hire him to also do the technological end of my business.

But I have recently taken some baby steps to DIY  some technology “things”.

Because I am a visual learner, I am going to visually show you what I have done. Be prepared to be amazed. 🙂

Etsy has offered a video spot that can be attached to your store.

I contacted Spencer to ask if I could attach the video we had made last August. He quickly responded and sent me a link for the video. A link, ugh. How the heck do I get that linked to my shop? I knew Spencer was not going to help me. My definition of help me is  “do it for me”. His definition of help:

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

What would’ve taken him 30 seconds to upload, took me hours. I am not exaggerating about that. 🙂

Bottom line is that I did it. All by my little ol’ self.

Here are the results for you to enjoy. I will teach you how to find it. 🙂

Go to OldLakeGeorge.com and click on Menu

Click on Shop

This will pop up next

Slide up through all of the items until you come to this towards the bottom. Click on About This Shop (the words beside my face)

This will pop up.

That’s the video we made and it is now part of my shop!

I don’t know if I am more excited to share this video with you or the fact that I succeeded at something techy!

See you on Friday,

Wendy

Have you noticed that I have been adding these goodies at the end of the blog posts? Yep, another techy thing I was taught. 🙂

THE APPLE DOESN’T FALL FAR FROM THE TREE (10)

Sidenote Saturday: The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far From The Tree

Sidenote Saturday: The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far From The Tree

There are so many memorable moments when raising children.

The first time your baby sleeps through the night, which, let’s be honest is anything over 4 hours at a stretch, the first time they roll over, the first tooth, the first day of school and on and on and on.

Wade and I are in the stages of child rearing that we are looking at lasts.

The last time we have a high school graduation, the last time we pay for our children’s car insurance, the last time we have a HUGE monthly grocery bill and on and on and on.

Where the lasts are not nearly as exciting as the firsts, they are still a part of life and mark a passage of time.

Samantha had her wisdom teeth removed about 4 years ago and it was a hoot watching her wake up from the anesthesia.

When she woke up, her first question was, Am I done?

Yes, Samantha, your wisdom teeth are out, you are done.

She slowly closed her eyes and laid her head back down.

Within a minute, a little crinkle would develop between her brows, her eyes would pop open and she would say, Seriously?

Yes, Samantha your wisdom teeth are out, you are done.

Around and around we went with that conversation until she became a little more coherent. And by a little, I mean she asked me one more time after we were in the car and we were leaving the dentist office parking lot.

I didn’t answer. 🙂

Now it was Jack’s turn. The second child, the last time we pay for wisdom teeth surgery. 🙂

The surgery went well. When they brought me back to the little recovery room he was sleeping flat on his back with his arm sticking out from under the covers. I patted his arm to get him to open his eyes.

He looked at me, the white tile drop ceiling and the beige walls and his first comment was, Well, they could’ve decorated more pleasant.

When I hear something that I find really funny, I tend to burst out into a not quite appropriate loud laugh. This was a loud laugh moment.

This comment from our 6’1″ 220 lb. motorcycle loving, dirt under his fingernails, camo wearing 17 year-old. He was very chatty as he was coming out of the anesthesia. Then we got to the car and he passed out.

Samantha is like her Dad. They both like to make sure they have all of the information correct before moving forward.

Jack? Two words. Apple/Tree.

Have a great weekend. I hope you can stop by on Monday.

Bow Ties For Dummies

Bow Ties For Dummies

After making well over 1300 pillows and almost reaching my next milestone of 1300 sales, the most common question I still receive is, “Don’t you get tired of sewing?” 🙂

The answer? No, never.

When I am sewing wholesale orders of 5 to 100 covers using the same fabric, that gets a little monotonous because it is the same fabric, over and over. But I always love to sew.

When I find myself getting bored, and between you and me, I am not good at bored, I like to find a quick DIY sewing project to tackle.

Today was that day. I was filling a large order of these covers to be shipped to a buyer in Canada.

I needed to break up all of that white and play with some color.

Wade and I have a holiday dinner party this weekend at a co-workers home, so I thought it would be festive to make him a bow tie to wear.

I picked a blue cotton fabric with a small print and found a free bow tie pattern.

The directions were simple and straight forward.

Cut, sew, iron.  Okay not quite that simple, but you can find the tutorial at SewLikeMyMom.com.

The bow tie turned out nice.

When Wade got home from work and after supper, (don’t need a hangry husband), I asked him if he would watch a YouTube video about how to tie a bow tie and then model my creation for me.

Wade, bless his heart, watched a video at least 3 times before jumping in.

It didn’t go so well.

The man has the patience of a saint. And this task tested his limits. But in his defense, he had had a long day and tying a bow tie is not easy.

He did have one good attempt but it didn’t…..okay it looked bad. 🙂

So I took matters into my own hands. After watching several videos, including How To Tie a Bow Tie for Dummies, and failing miserably to even get one good attempt, I stopped trying.

The shame.  🙂

Bottom line, I’ll stick with sewing and Wade will wear a nice sweater.

See you on Friday,

Wendy

Get to Know Me

Get to Know Me

Read, Shop and Be Inspired.

Hi, I’m Wendy. Thanks for stopping by.

I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit.  Besides working full time and raising a family, I have attempted several small businesses, but they never felt quite right.

Then in the fall of 2012 all of my stars aligned and I opened an Etsy Shop.  My love of fabric, sewing, selling and customer service came to fruition.

Wanting to connect more with customers, I teamed up with my nephew Spencer and we developed the blog OldLakeGeorge in the spring of 2015. The blog continues to grow and reach out to others with the hope of being inspiring, motivational and making you smile.
