A New Perspective For Today

Have you seen the pictures of the stairs? 🙂 Wait, what you have? Fine. But let me show you a new perspective.

And one more angle.

I have finally figured out how to work my new camera. Well actually it is my second new camera. There were too many bells and whistles on the Nikon blah, blah, blah camera so I opted for a Ricoh GR II. It is smaller. Smaller than my phone and easy to point and shoot great photos. Plus it fits easily into my purse.

Up until this point, I have been using my iPhone to take most pictures. (Photos above and on the right are from my iPhone.)  I edit them the best that I can, but they need to be better. And now they are better. (Photos above and on the left are with the Ricoh.) And tomorrow they will be even more amazing because Spencer is spending the day with me  teaching more photography tips and tricks.

Since I was flying high with all of my new camera skills, I wanted to keep my confidence level up and make something in the garage using power tools.

The garage doors went up, the sunshine filled the work bench and the breeze was warm enough and strong enough to blow the sawdust from my last project out the back garage door. Thank you Mother Nature for helping me clean up.

So now, what to make.

Looking above the workbench, I found that Wade had neatly organized the left over stair treads.

Oddly enough my first thought was to make a cake stand. Maybe that’s not so odd considering I didn’t have lunch yet and I have an enormous sweet tooth.

Using a dinner plate, I traced the circle outline onto the pine wood. Each tread piece had already been stained and finished with two coats of poly for the stairs, so that step was done. Then firing up the scroll saw, I followed the line to create the top of the cake plate.

Now for the legs.

I wanted the stand to be rustic/farmhouse. Nothing screams rustic farmhouse like a tree branch.

Slicing up a branch allowed me to adjust the height of the stand.

Seven slices seemed to be a perfect height. It would be fun to fill a table using all different heights of stands. Some high, some low and some just right. 🙂

Now the fun part. Time to style the cake plate.  I drove into town to the local County Market and grabbed a cute small cake and some cupcakes.

Perfectly imperfect roundness and style.

This could be such an interesting stand for a rustic wedding cake, a lumberjack birthday party, an hors de oeuvres tray out on the patio or even a centerpiece with some small vases of flowers.

I love having options.
