All Misty Eyed

by | Apr 5, 2016 | Life

I received a heartfelt, misty eyed story from a reader and customer that purchased one of Jack’s custom metal signs.

Grab a Kleenex. This will touch your heart.

Wendy-
I just read your post on both the stairs and the sign.   I, too, will be conquering my carpeted stairs so I greatly appreciate your tips and advice.  Also, I was one of the few who received a metal sign.   My great grandpa came over from Germany when he was 14 years old.  He settled in Chicago with an uncle and later opened his own bakery – Schellhorn’s Bakery.  When I was growing up, he would come into town to stay at my grandmas for the holidays.  Then he would come over to our house for one full day of baking.  It took several years for my mom just to get s workable recipe from him for his coffee cake.   It was in his head and, in his heavy German accent, he would say “A little more flour than butter.”  Well, when you’re already working with 5lbs of flour -what does that translate to?   After mom had a rough-working recipe, she had to condense it down to a more manageable amount.  His recipes made 64 coffee cakes.
Everyone loves his coffee cakes to this day.   And his love of baking continues in our family as several of his great-great grandkids love to bake.  To preserve and pass down a bit of our family’s heritage, I made a recipe board to hang in our large, walk-in pantry.  I have hung his decorators bag and measuring spoons along  the side of it.  The sign you made for us hangs above it and makes it all complete.
I apologize for not expressing my gratitude sooner.  There are no excuses.  Thank you for creating such a beautiful sign for us!      We love it
(I have already received some angry attitudes from family members who saw I posted this on my FB page.  Please do not share the photo as I am not authorized to share the recipe-even if it makes 64.  Thanks for your understanding)

Beautifully written.

I asked Moriah if I could share the picture with the recipe beneath it IF I promised not to show the whole recipe.

She said Yes.  🙂
