Something Old Something New Something Borrowed Something Blue

Something happened at our house this weekend. Another milestone of life was reached. The circle of life continued.

Without further ado, Wade and I are proud to announce that our daughter Samantha got engaged!

Her boyfriend of almost 5 years popped the question a week ago Sunday, but I was sworn to secrecy until she officially announced it.

And now the secret is out and I am in full wedding mode.

Justin and Sam have not set a wedding date, but that’s a minor detail. 🙂

Taking care of the “Something Old, Something New” segment of the saying, I had asked Justin if he would consider giving Sam the original diamond that Wade had given me over 25 years ago. He graciously said that he would love that.

Over the twenty-five years of our marriage, we have upgraded diamonds, but I never traded in the original diamond. I had it placed in a necklace. I told Sam that I would never give up that diamond.

Tricky me.

She was totally overwhelmed and thrilled by Justin’s proposal and it was fun knowing that he got to share the story of the diamond with her.

I realize this isn’t a wedding décor/design/apparel blog so I hope you will forgive me if wedding updates pop up every once in a while.  🙂

On Wednesday I will be showing the new inserts available for this rustic wire egg crate I have for sale.

I only have 4 baskets left, but I thought it would be interesting to offer different styles on liners.

Here is a sneak peek of what I am calling the toy box liner.

Thank you for letting me share our personal news.

I hope you’ll stop by on Wednesday.

Who knew a set of rustic candle holders could be so exciting!

Who knew a set of rustic candle holders could be so exciting!

I shared with you in the recent past that I bought a drill press!  Well, I have been putting that drill press and miter saw to work again. And this time, I have to say that I have totally outdone myself.  How could that possibly have happened you wonder?  Hold on.

Our neighbor Jimmy works at the local tree farm.  His wife Nikki wanted some new pillows.  I needed some trees. So just like an old fashioned trading post, we traded some white birch trees for some red geometric patterned pillow covers.  Win-Win.

At the tree farm, they periodically thin sections of trees to encourage the best and strongest trees to thrive. These reduced trees are then recycled into mulch and used at the farm greenhouse. Jimmy rescued these trees so I could repurpose them into candle holders.  He dropped them off the other day.  He even cut off the twiggy branches that I don’t need. What a guy!

Each tree was between 2-3 inches in diameter. A few in the 3 1/2 to 4 inch range. My next step was to simply cut them into 2, 4 and 6 inch heights and set them aside to dry.

My drying time frame wasn’t exactly scientific.  I moved on to other projects and when those were completed, maybe two weeks?, I returned to the drill press to complete the candle holders.

Each birch holder has a spot drilled in big enough to insert a tea size candle. They fit snuggly down into the wood, and are replaceable.

Each and every candle holder is unique to the section of branch it came from.  No two sets are alike. They are not polished or disturbed in any way, giving them a true rustic appearance.

Fall decorating anyone?

Winter decorating?

I could go on and on….one simple set of candle holders and so many options.

Do any of you play Trivia Crack?  You know the App that is basically the board game version of Trivia Pursuit?  If you don’t, you should.  It is so fun and additive. There are six different categories to answer questions from.  I always, always pick the history category last. It is my weakest subject.  That and geography.  Ugh, geography.

Why am I bringing this up? By some miracle,  I have a quick little history lesson for you today. It will never be a Trivia Crack question, but well, maybe someday it will be and then you can thank me when you win the game. 🙂

Did you know that way back in 2012, Old Lake George was named Pooh Pooh Pillows?  Yep, you read that right, Pooh Pooh Pillows. PPP.

I started my Etsy shop making pillows and my family refers to me as Pooh. So logically Pooh Pooh Pillows came to be.  I messed around with the name Pooh Pillows, but it made me think that I was selling Winnie the Pooh Pillows or Pillows made from pooh, and ain’t nobody wantin’ a pillow made from pooh.  🙂

Fast forward to 2015.  We bought a house on Lake George in Minnesota.

The feeling of Pooh Pooh Pillows was changing because I was now making several other items besides just pillows.  I had more of a vintage, French farmhouse rustic vibe and I wanted that to be reflected in the name. I played around with “Lake Studio”, “Sewing Studio”, “Pillow Studio”, etc but there didn’t seem to be the all encompassing feeling of what I wanted to project in a name.

Then one day I was giving someone directions to our home and within the actual directions, you turn right onto Old Lake George.  Ba-zing-a!!  I guess I literally needed a “sign” to direct me to the answer for a shop name.

End of story.  End of history lesson.  🙂
