Sidenote Saturday: Free and Easy

Happy Saturday Everyone! I finished my super easy project today. And the best part is that it was free too. Free and easy on a Saturday…what a great way to start the weekend.

It all started when I was in Hobby Lobby the other day.

These chalkboard painted random size bottles were on a lower shelf just waiting for someone to notice them.

And I did. I noticed them. They were only $7.99 and with a 40% off coupon, they would be only….less than that. 🙂

But fortunately, every once in a while Wade loves to have a Bourbon. It seems that Bourbon bottles are the coolest bottles. So as soon as he finished this bottle, I snagged it.

Exact same bottle as the one on the left, right?

So here we go.

How to make your own twine topped decorative bottle.

  1. Drink a cool bottle of bourbon 🙂
  2. Soak it in a bucket of water to get the label off.
  3. Completely dry off the bottle.
  4. Add frog tape around any areas that you do not want painted. I only wanted the top lip to remain clear.

5.  Simply paint the bottle. I used an indoor outdoor latex paint only because I had some in the storage room and I knew I wasn’t going to be writing on the bottle. Maybe someday I will and if so I will use a paint marker, but not today.

6.  Let the painted bottle dry as you are cleaning up your paint brush and putting stuff away.

7.  Remove the duck tape.

8.  Get some twine or bleached twine or thin roping. I had some twine hanging around on my twine holder.

9.  Cut off a long piece of twine, longer than you think you might need.

10.  I choose to hide my ends under the other wrapped layers. You can also tie an artsy knot of bow.

11.  I wound from bottom to top, but either way will work.

12.  Tie it off in a knot or bow again, I tucked the end under.

Final step. Sit back and admire your work.

Imagine all of the different patterns and colors and shapes of bottles you could use. So many options, so little time.

See you on Monday,

Wendy

There are still a few egg crate rustic industrial baskets left.

Read all about them here.

Quick shop for them here.

Sidenote Saturday: Sharing

Sidenote Saturday: Sharing

We are taught to share from an early age. And today I would like to share with you some things that have been happening at Old Lake George.

Did you all know that I have a “Contact” button with the blog? No? Well I do and it has been fixed. For whatever reason it was just a button. Now it is a button that actually works and you can contact Old Lake George with all of your comments, questions and concerns. Contact away!

Have you been to Costco to pick up your tulips? Look how beautiful mine are and how much they have grown.

For a girl who only has a green thumb when she holds on tight to too many green jelly beans, these tulips were right up my alley. I added water every other day. I feel so accomplished. ; )

Speaking of jelly beans, after you go get your tulips, swing by Target and in the dollar section, grab one of these.

For only $3, this ceramic glazed container is amazing! I grabbed the last white one but they had Easter pink, green or yellow ones too. The ideas are endless for how you can display this.  I did this.

I am so excited to announce that our daughter Samantha has been accepted into Graduate School at UND for their Occupational Therapist Program! Congratulations Sam. All of her hard work and dedication for the past four years has come to fruition.

And one more sharing sidenote.

This happened last night after watching fireworks on the beach in Hawaii.

Wade whispered some very romantic things in my ear and presented me with a box of chocolates. A box of chocolates that happened to have a pair of diamond earrings in them! This man is the greatest blessing, diamonds or no diamonds.

Thank you for letting me share.

Aloha,

Wendy

Sidenote Saturday: Helpful Hints

Sidenote Saturday: Helpful Hints

Oh. My. Goodness.

Slash OMG as the cool kids say.

I live in a very small town. In fact there is only one stop light in the entire small town and the town is putting in a round about so they can market the town as a stop light less town.

No idea why that would be a great marketing ploy, but the city council didn’t ask me.

Moving on.

On the “main stop sign corner” of the town, which is under construction to be a round-about by spring, there is a thrift store. It use to be a grocery store but then the County Market grocery store chain moved in and shut down the “main stop sign corner” grocery store.

Continuing to move on…

We have lived in this area for 2 years now and I have never frequented this thrift store. I am more of an estate sale kinda girl. I  made a decision to expand my world,  😉 , and I decided to support the local businesses and check out the thrift store.

Back to my original statement.

OMG.

I will not tell you the name of the store because I believe in supporting local small businesses. BUT…..there is a really good chance that I will be sticking with Estate Sales from here on out.

Part of that has to do with me making a bad decision. The other part is that my father taught long ago that if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

Here is the rocking chair I thought I could upholstery.

It had a vinyl cover on the seat and back.  Some of the wood was worn, but it had a lot of character left.

A lot of character left until I started to pull off the fabric.

Let me just say that it was gross. You know when you watch a 20/20 show and people are getting sick and don’t know why until they find that black mold has grown up their walls? This old rocking chair was in that house.

I kept thinking that everything would get better as I peeled off the old vinyl fabric.

It didn’t.

See for yourself.

Ew.

I know when to wave a white flag. There was no amount of paint or fabric that was going to save this chair. The side spindles are still in great shape, so I will saw them off and rescue them for something, someday.

So many people find great success at picking items from thrift stores.

Me? Not so much.

Helpful hints:

Look for “good bones”.

Look for missing pieces and decide if you have the ability to fix it.

Tear back as much of the fabric that the shop owner will allow to see what is underneath.

Ask for a deal.

Walk away if it seems to good to be true.

I need to start taking my own advise.  🙂

Have a great Saturday,

I hope you stop by on Monday.

Wendy

Sidenote Saturday: A Girl Can Always Dream

Sidenote Saturday: A Girl Can Always Dream

Hello Saturday!

Wade and I are driving over to a furniture store this morning with our neighbor Nikki. Nikki has asked me for my opinion with a couple of home decorating ideas. She likes how I decorate my house although she has a completely different style.

And that got me thinking.

What exactly is my style?

Pretty heavy question for a Saturday, right? 🙂

One of the no-no’s of blogging is that you do not copy other peoples photos without permission.

Boo.

But I understand.

Fortunately there is a way around that. If I had all of the time and money in the world, this is what each of these rooms in my house would look like.

Click on the colored word or link to pop around my dream house tour.

Kitchen:

Living room:

Bedroom

Office

Outdoor Space:

Don’t think that I am not very grateful for what I do have.  I am. But I also enjoy dreaming.

Wondering what your style might be? Go to Houzz.com and click pictures from different areas of a home. When you find the one that takes your breath away, see which category it falls under. Do you see that the same category keeps popping up? Bingo, that’s your style.

And by the way, my style is Traditional with a Rustic Farmhouse twist. 🙂

I have super exciting news to share with you next week. Life changing news.

I hope you can stop by.

Have a great weekend,

Wendy

Sidenote Saturday: I Forgot to Remember

Sidenote Saturday: I Forgot to Remember

Happy Saturday, Thanks for stopping by!

Yesterday I shared a couple of tricks that I use to battle my depression.

I had referenced it, but I forgot to show you my new mantel and sofa décor.

I hope all of you know about DecorSteals.com. It is an amazing website that has a little bit of everything from the home decorating world.

Right after Christmas they had a “grab bag” offer. I have seen this offer a couple of times a year, but this year I decided to “grab it”. You pay a certain price and they send you 3-4 random items. Everything is wonderful, so you can’t go wrong. And like they say, if for some reason you don’t like it, you are already on your way to shopping for Christmas next year.

I received 2 pillows. Which I thought was funny, considering I have hundreds of them upstairs. But just like the hair stylist that has someone else cut her hair, it is still exciting to get new pillows that I don’t have to make.

Sadly, these pillows are Christmas themed items, so they will need to be packed away soon. But I thought they could hang out for a while and just be cute.

I was squealingly thrilled when I unwrapped this.

A metal bird wire cloche on a stand! I added that blue ornamental glass balls for a touch of color.

No on ever said you had to put a bird in a bird cage.  🙂

See you Monday with a review about the shops in Des Moines, Iowa. 🙂
